[justify][size=8]However intimidating he may seem, it becomes obvious fairly quickly that Nightstream is the opposite of threatening. He tries to come across as a generous and friendly cat, full of muted energy — the kind of cat you wouldn’t mind going on a hunting patrol with. Regardless of which Clans are involved, he’s always happy to make connections. Interacting with others energizes him as much as a good swim; there’s little he enjoys more. Though he appreciates quiet days as much as anyone else, he can’t stand solitude.
Under his amiable, trusting exterior, he’s surprisingly observant. The slightest differences in other cats’ behavior stand out to him. Even unfamiliar faces are easy to read, with some exceptions. But all the attentiveness in the world cannot a wordsmith make. Knowing this, he rarely brings up his observations, especially when conversing with strangers. Despite being such a skilled creature-reader, his vision is remarkably narrow: He could spot a single monarch butterfly amid a field of orange-and-black flowers spanning fox-lengths, yet manage to miss the spontaneous disappearance of an entire forest at the same time.
As a result of his tendency to see the small things, he has a short attention span. Combined with a poor memory, this makes him extremely unreliable. Nightstream doesn’t purposefully forget his tasks, but the world is so full, and the tiniest shift in it can draw his attention away from whatever he’s working on. He routinely comes back late from patrols or business with other Clans, not even realizing he’s made a mistake until someone else tells him. When he finds something different, his kittenlike curiosity just won’t let him leave it alone.
Clan life is full of dangers. Few of those are large enough to deter Nightstream. If making a decision on short notice, he will almost always act first, ignoring the consequences of his actions. This doesn't mean he's fearless — far from it. But his failure to look before he leaps often takes him into unsafe territory and further, and for a cat like him, there's no backing out. When forced to consider his options, he follows his head before his heart. He may not be the smartest cat, but logic is a necessity in the wild.
He says what he thinks when it’s asked of him, and sometimes when it’s entirely unwanted. An honest cat by nature, Nightstream would rather turn in his own father than lie to a leader’s face. There are white lies, of course, when the stakes are lower, and he’s as likely to make factual errors as anyone else — perhaps more so, considering his hastiness in decision-making — but he prefers to be truthful. Though he should know better, he expects the same honesty from others. Words rarely offend him; thank StarClan for that. Unfortunately, this means he treats what he believes to be truth as more important than, say, having a peaceful discussion. Starting arguments is rarely his intention; that doesn't prevent it from being a result.
Even honest cats have their faults, and Nightstream has a few glaring ones. First and foremost is his great pride in being pure SkyClan — leading to his lack of respect for half-Clan cats. As he’s gotten older, he’s mellowed a bit; ultimately, he still treats these cats like warriors. However, he routinely underestimates them, even if they’re older or obviously more experienced than he is, and he doesn’t always obey half-Clanners in authority. If he can help it, he tries to avoid them entirely. A few half-Clanners can earn his admiration, but it takes time and actions, and it’s never, ever guaranteed.
This logic is heavily flawed; several cats have proven so, including his second mentor, Foxdancer. Nightstream is just too darn stubborn to give it up. Trying to change his mind once it's made is comparable to shoving a mountain and expecting to move: There are very few things that can convince him he’s wrong, and fewer still that can get him to voice it. Like any cat, Nightstream’s had a plethora of ideas, but, in his hardheadedness, he’s acted on a good number of them — and gotten himself in trouble for his efforts.
